Germany's Study Visa: Updated Financial Requirements and Proof of Funds Options

To study in Germany, you need to provide proof of funds by depositing the required amount into a blocked account in Germany. This blocked account is mandated by German authorities as proof of sufficient financial means necessary to obtain a German visa.

The current amount required to deposit into your blocked account is €11,208. Starting from the 2024/25 academic year, international students will need to demonstrate financial resources of €11,904 to secure a study permit in Germany. This represents an increase of about 6%, from €11,208 to €11,904.

To meet these requirements, you have three options:

1. Blocked Account

The required amount must be deposited into a German account and remains inaccessible until the student arrives in Germany. Once in Germany, the student is allowed monthly withdrawals up to a specific limit. The current monthly withdrawal limit from this account is €934, intended to cover living expenses such as rent, food, health insurance, and other costs.

2. Bank Guarantee

This is a commitment by a bank to cover a specific amount of money on behalf of the student, which can be used for living expenses during their stay in Germany. The bank issues a guarantee to the immigration authorities, promising to pay a specified amount if the student fails to meet financial obligations. The guarantee amount usually matches the minimum required for a blocked account. Unlike a blocked account, where the student must deposit the entire amount in advance, a bank guarantee allows the student to avoid tying up their funds. The bank essentially acts as a guarantor, making this option advantageous if you have a bank willing to serve as your guarantor.

3. Certified Family Income and Assets:

The student can provide certified documentation showing their family’s income and assets

Any of the three methods listed above are approved ways to demonstrate proof of funds for the German student visa application.
